The Electric Dipole.
An important charge distribution is an electric dipole. A dipole consists of two point charges of equal magnitude and opposite sign. Ordinarily, the symbol q representing the
charge on an object may be positive or nagative. But when referring
to a dipole, we customarily let q reqresent the magnitude of either
charge so that one particle has charge +q and the other has charge -q.
